Le Morne

Le Morne is a mountain and peninsula with the same name which is located in the southwestern tip of Mauritius. The height of the basalt mountain is about 556 meters above sea level. Nowadays the mountain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the most beautiful places in Mauritius and a famous landmark.

The name of Mount Lemorn Brabant is linked with the history of the island. According to legend, at the beginning of the 19th century, runaway slaves were hiding in caves on the mountainside. On February 1, 1835, when slavery was abolished,  the authorities organized a police expedition to the mountain to inform the slaves that they were free. However, the slaves thought that the police were going to arrest them and started jumping off the mountain. Since that time, February 1 is a holiday in Mauritius, and also the day of the abolition of slavery.

The most spectacular picture on the peninsula is the mountain, the steep cliffs which will not make it easy to climb to its top. The mountain is included to the UNESCO World Heritage List. There is only one side of it where tourists may have a walk. But during the rains, the mountain is “closed” for climbing. The main attraction of Le Morne is the only illusion of an underwater waterfall on the planet. Landscapes that turned out to be fake, enclosed between coral reefs, sand and silty sand deposits, are set in motion by flowing underwater waters. The illusion of a vortex flow is created, sinking straight to the ocean floor. It seems that a very professional artist named Nature painted graffiti on the water. The best way to watch this illusion is from a helicopter. Its area is so large so it may be visible on satellite images also.

The beach of Le Morne Brabant, which is under the reliable protection of the mountain from the wind. Tripety travelers will be able to see the most beautiful sunsets when the sun sets behind the mountain. This is a favorite place for romantic get-togethers. The beach is divided into two parts: in one, there is only a beach with installed sun loungers and umbrellas, and in the second, platforms and cabins for active rest. Here people go for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Hotels on the peninsula are very expensive.
